Prostate cancer tests

May 23rd, 2012

Cancer screening tests - including the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test to look for signs of prostate cancer - can be a good idea. [1]

Healthy men shouldn’t get routine prostate cancer screenings, says updated advice from a U.S. government panel that found the PSA blood tests do more harm than good. [2]

MONDAY, May 21 (HealthDay News) — In a highly anticipated move sure to unleash heated debate, a prominent U.S. government advisory panel is recommending that men of all ages no longer be screened for prostate cancer by undergoing the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test. [3]

Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) is a substance made by cells in the prostate gland (both normal cells and cancer cells). [4]

The PSA test should be abandoned as a prostate cancer screening tool, a government advisory panel has concluded after determining that the side effects from needless biopsies and treatments hurt many more men than are potentially helped by early detection of cancers. [5]

Or at least that’s the way some people look at the task force’s latest guidelines on prostate cancer screening, which say doctors should stop doing routine PSA tests on men of any age. [6]

“This is important information for the public and men to have, and they should talk with their doctors about the risks and benefits of prostate cancer screening and make the decision that’s best for them,” said Mark Weber, a spokesman for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. [2]

The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, an independent group of medical experts in prevention and evidence-based medicine, said PSA screening results in overdiagnosis of prostate cancer and unnecessary treatment that can leave men impotent and incontinent. [3]

The recommendation from the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force runs counter to two decades of medical practice in which many primary-care physicians give the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test to healthy middle-aged men. [8]

WR tweets HIV results

May 23rd, 2012

On Tuesday, Clowney fired off a tweet of his HIV test results, which, evidently, he received from his doctors Tuesday, and was unable to contain his excitement. [1]

About 150 cyclists are rolling through the Sacramento Valley to raise awareness and funds for HIV/AIDS testing and services. [2]

Upon entering the league as a fifth-round pick in 2007, David Clowney has bounced around the NFL, with stops in New York, Carolina, and, currently, Buffalo. [1]

Bills WR Stevie Johnson is the NFL’s favorite class clown as we all know. [3]

A guy with only 8,800 Twitter followers is causing a HUGE blog-gasm by sports blogger dorks who probably never wrote a single post about David Clowney before today. [2]

The talented star is currently in Philadelphia to enter into surgery for the nagging groin injury which kept a governor on his stats last season. [...] When I prepared myself for the Buffalo Bills draft possibilities this past week there were quite a few names I expected I could hear with the tenth overall pick. [...] Just a couple of days ago Buffalo Bills wide receiver Stevie Johnson tweeted that he’d be undergoing groin surgery in Philadelphia early this week. [...] Sixth Round Pick (178): Mark Asper (OG-Oregon) Grade: B Analysis: Asper is an extremely versatile lineman for the Buffalo Bills to find late in the draft, as he played guard and left tackle at Oregon. [...] None of those names were South Carolina cornerback Stephon Gilmore. [3]
