– U.S. Army Gen. David Petraeus, who served as the top U.S. commander in Iraq and Afghanistan, ended his military career Wednesday to take the reins at the CIA. [6]

Petraeus looked back over his celebrated career, which began when he was commissioned a second lieutenant after graduating from West Point in June 1974. [4]

Gen. David H. Petraeus has been the most prominent American military commander over the past decade, the architect of the 2007 surge in Iraq and later the top commander of American forces in Afghanistan. [7]

I am taking off the uniform I have worn for 37 years to do this the right way,” Petraeus said earlier this year. [6]

Spending cuts also must not undercut the versatility and flexibility that the Army and other services have developed in fighting insurgencies in Iraq and Afghanistan, he told his retirement ceremony on a sun-splashed parade field at Fort Myer, adjacent to Arlington National Cemetery. [1]

He is credited with turning around the Iraq war and helping pivot the still uncertain campaign in Afghanistan. [3]

General Petraeus took over direct command of the forces in Afghanistan in June 2010 after President Obama removed Gen. Stanley A. McChrystal from the post for contemptuous remarks he and his staff members made about top administration officials in an article in Rolling Stone magazine. [7]

Some critics of his push to more troops into the conflict there say Obama’s decision to draw down those troops over the coming year shows the administration is abandoning Petraeus’ counterinsurgency campaign. [2]

America’s best-known general is taking off his uniform before starting a new chapter as the 20th director of the CIA next week, where he will keep waging war on al-Qaida and other terrorist groups, but in a far different form. [2]

The Khan Academy is a not-for-profit educational organization, created in 2006 by MIT graduate educator Salman Khan. [1]

The Khan Academy is a not-for-profit educational organization with the mission of providing a world-class education to anyone, anywhere. [...] It was created by Salman Khan and provides a free online collection of more than 2,000 (and growing) videos on mathematics, science, history, and economics. [2]

With the stated mission of “providing a high quality education to anyone, anywhere”, the website supplies a free online collection of more than 2,400 micro lectures via video tutorials stored on YouTube teaching mathematics, history, finance, physics, chemistry, biology, astronomy, economics and computer science. [...] Their popularity there and the testimonials of appreciative students prompted Khan to quit his job in finance in 2009 and focus on the tutorials (then released under the moniker “Khan Academy”) full-time. [1]

Once you get your feet wet, you may want to try some of the videos in the “Algebra I Worked Examples” playlist. [3]

Students from around the world have been attracted to Khan’s concise, practical and relaxed teaching method. [2]

Eric Marcos’ sixth-grade math students are making their own video tutorials to explain math to fellow students, reports KQED’s MindShift. [4]

The best teachers would have time to work closely with more students. [4]

Start here if you have very little background in math fundamentals (or just want to make sure you do). [...] Topics covered from very basic algebra all the way through algebra II. [3]

Probably still useful if you want to make sure you have a solid understanding of basic high school math. [3]

When other relatives and friends sought similar help, he decided it would be more practical to distribute the tutorials on YouTube. [1]
