wilco

Wednesday, June 29th, 2011

It was with Foxtrot that Wilco succeeded at leaving any alt country vestiges behind, venturing into more moody, dislocated songwriting tangled up inside noise experiments and amputated guitar leads. [1]

The band continued in the alternative country of Uncle Tupelo on its debut album A.M. (1995), but has since introduced more experimental aspects to their music. [2]

The band was formed in 1994 by the remaining members of alternative country group Uncle Tupelo following singer Jay Farrar ’s departure. [...] The band continued in the alternative country of Uncle Tupelo on its debut album A.M. (1995), but has since introduced more experimental aspects to their music, including elements of alternative rock, and classic pop. [3]

Over the next three albums, the band recorded the rootsy A.M., veered toward the orchestral pop of Being There, and earned a Grammy nomination for Mermaid Avenue (an album of Woody Guthrie lyrics for which the band and Billy Bragg wrote music), before running toward a sunny, West Coast-inspired pop utopia of complex introspection with Summer Teeth. [1]

As it turns out, they’re following their dream of creating their own label, while the fans are getting more chances than ever to see them live this summer. [4]

This article is about the American rock band. [3]

Wilco is an American rock band based in Chicago, Illinois. [2]

Their first album, A.M. (1995) relied heavily on the alternative country that they had grown accustomed to, but the following six albums also incorporated alternative rock and classic pop. [4]

Playlists may contain up to 100 songs. [5]

Wilco garnered media attention for its fourth album, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot (2002), and the controversy surrounding it. [2]

Their sixth, Sky Blue Sky, came in the spring of 2007, sounding like a return to simplified guitar pop with sing-along songs that unfold and unleash stormy guitar solos courtesy of Nels Cline. [1]

Wilco’s lineup has changed frequently, with only singer Jeff Tweedy and bassist John Stirratt remaining from the original incarnation. [3]

A demo tape from these recordings was sent to executives at Reprise Records, a subsidiary of Warner Brothers, and the label signed Tweedy to a contract. [3]

canada day

Wednesday, June 29th, 2011

With the 1982 passage of the Canada Act, its name was officially changed to Canada Day. [1]

Canada Day is a federal holiday on July 1 to mark the anniversary of the date that Canada became a self-governing country. [2]

Our research and passion for Canadians has made us the number 1 resource for everything Canada Day. [3]

Before 1982 Canada Day had been known as Dominion Day, First of July, Confederation Day, and July the First. [4]

A new formula was developed in 1980 whereby the National Committee (the federal government organization charged with planning Canada’s Birthday celebrations) stressed and sponsored the development of local celebrations all across Canada. [5]

July 1, observed in Canada in commemoration of the formation of the Dominion in 1867. [1]

Canada will celebrate it’s 144th year since Confederation. [4]

On June 20, 1868, a proclamation signed by the Governor General, Lord Monck, called upon all Her Majesty’s loving subjects throughout Canada to join in the celebration of the anniversary of the formation of the union of the British North America provinces in a federation under the name of Canada on July 1. [...] Up until 1975, the focus of the celebrations, under the name “Festival Canada”, was held in the National Capital Region during the whole month of July and involved numerous cultural, artistic and sport activities, as well as municipalities and voluntary organizations. [5]

Canada became a kingdom in its own right on that date, but the British Parliament kept limited rights of political control over the new country that were shed by stages over the years until the last vestiges were surrendered in 1982 when the Constitution Act patriated the Canadian constitution. [6]

The anniversary of this date was called Dominion Day until 1982. [2]

If you would rather plan your own holiday entertainment, than our activities section is for you. [3]

No official celebrations were therefore held until 1917′the golden anniversary of Confederation’and then none again for a further decade. [6]

The celebrations often have a patriotic mood. [2]

Under the federal Holidays Act, Canada Day is observed on July 1 unless that date falls on a Sunday, in which case July 2 is the statutory holiday, although celebratory events generally take place on July 1 even though it is not the legal holiday. [6]

google buzz

Wednesday, June 29th, 2011

Google Buzz is a social networking and messaging tool from Google that is integrated into the company’s web-based email program, Gmail. [1]

When Google announced Google Buzz, its new social sharing feature for Gmail, company representatives admitted Buzz was inspired by a similar product: Google Wave. [2]

Google Buzz recommends interesting posts and weeds out ones you’re likely to skip. [3]

Follow us for the latest social media news in Google Buzz!! [4]

Todd Jackson, product manager for Google Buzz, has announced that the company will disable the feature which gave users a ready-made circle of friends based on their most frequent email and chat contacts in Gmail. [5]

Google Inc. has agreed to settle Federal Trade Commission charges that it used deceptive tactics and violated its own privacy promises to consumers when it launched its social network, Google Buzz, in 2010. [6]

Social Media news blog covering cool new websites and social networks: Facebook, Google, Twitter, MySpace and YouTube. [4]

Following anger from users, Google made changes and apologised for insufficient testing of the service. [...] Buzz angered many when it was launched because it automatically enrolled all Gmail users without seeking prior permission. [7]

Import your stuff from Twitter, Picasa, Flickr, and Google Reader. [3]

Part of the legal settlement required Google to e-mail Gmail users in the US to inform them of the development. [7]

This is the first time an FTC settlement order has required a company to implement a comprehensive privacy program to protect the privacy of consumers’ information. [6]

One feature in particular that was widely criticized as a severe privacy flaw was that by default Google Buzz publicly disclosed (on the user’s Google profile) a list of the names of Gmail contacts that the user has most frequently emailed or chatted with. [1]

But it also gave users a ready-made circle of friends based on the people they most frequently e-mailed. [7]

Both services are supposed to help you create conversations and give you a richer experience around Web-based media like videos, images, and regular text. [2]

corn

Wednesday, June 29th, 2011

This article is about the cereal grain, also known as corn in some countries. [1]

Corn or maize as it is known outside of the British Isles and the U.S., is an agricultural commodity classified as a cereal grain. [2]

U.S. corn farmers were unable to plant on soggy or flooded fields from Arkansas to North Dakota this year, signaling tighter grain stockpiles even after rising demand for livestock feed and ethanol sent prices surging. [3]

Thanks to Washington, 4 of every 10 ears of corn grown in America - the source of 40 percent of the world’s production - are shunted into ethanol, a gasoline substitute that imperceptibly nicks our energy problem. [4]

Traits that have been engineered into corn include resistance to herbicides and resistance to insect pests, the latter being achieved by incorporation of a gene that codes for the Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) toxin. [5]

Check out this awesome food term on FoodNetwork.com! [6]

Corn ethanol is produced from the agricultural product as a biomass through a process of industrial fermentation, chemical processing and distillation. [2]

Inedible parts of the plant are used in industry - stalks for paper and wallboard; husks for filling material; cobs for fuel, to make charcoal, and in the preparation of industrial solvents. [7]

By the end of the growing season, the kernels dry out and become difficult to chew without cooking them tender first in boiling water. [1]

‘That means ethanol production is totally unresponsive to price,’ Wallace Tyner, an agricultural economist at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, said in a report this week. [3]

Everything on the corn plant can be used: the husks for tamales, the silk for medicinal tea, the kernels for food and the stalks for fodder. [6]

The Olmec and Mayans cultivated it in numerous varieties throughout central and southern Mexico, cooked, ground or processed through nixtamalization. [...] The leafy stalk produces ears which contain seeds called kernels. [1]

In 2001, Bt176 varieties were voluntarily withdrawn from the list of approved varieties by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) when it was found to have little or no Bt expression in the ears and was not found to be effective against second generation corn borers. [5]

Natural cereal grains are produced on a large scale for human consumption and farm livestock feeding. [2]
