Mr Mubarak’s address came after a day of anti-government protests, in which thousands of Egyptians defied a curfew in Cairo, Alexandria and Suez declared earlier by the President. [1]

Police and demonstrators have fought running battles on the streets of Cairo in a fourth day of protests by tens of thousands of Egyptians demanding an end to president Hosni Mubarak’s 30-year rule. [2]

Emboldened by this month’s revolt that toppled the authoritarian leader of Tunisia, Egyptians have staged mass protests since Tuesday in an unprecedented outburst of anger against Mr Mubarak. [3]

Chaos engulfed Egypt Friday as protesters seized the streets of the capital, battling police with stones, bottles and firebombs and burning down the ruling party headquarters. [5]
