the mist

Monday, September 27th, 2010

Perhaps the most striking aspect of The Mist is how distinctly different it feels from Darabont’s previous King adaptations; whereas The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile both felt meticulously crafted and remarkably earnest, this bleak look at a decidedly supernatural disaster instead comes off as intimate, urgent, and even somewhat reckless at times. [1]

After recording their 1986 debut Morbid Visions, Guedz left Sepultura to form the Mist, issuing the group’s first album Phantasmagoria in 1989; The Hangman Tree followed two years later. [2]

The Mist (also known as Stephen King’s The Mist) is a 2007 American horror film based on the 1980 novella of the same name by Stephen King. [3]

View company contact information for The Mist on IMDbPro. [4]

Frank Darabont’s impressive camerawork and politically incisive script make The Mist a truly frightening experience. [5]

The film is written and directed by Frank Darabont, who had previously adapted Stephen King’s works The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile. [3]

The 2010 Toronto Film Festival Wrap-Up!!! [6]

Frequent Stephen King collaborator Frank Darabont (The Shawshank Redemption) teamed with the celebrated horror author once again for this tale of terror concerning a small town engulfed by a malevolent mist, based on a story originally published in King’s 1985 horror anthology Skeleton Crew. [1]

“The Mist” is a horror novella by the American author Stephen King, in which the small town of Bridgton, Maine is suddenly enveloped in an unnatural mist that conceals otherworldly monsters. [2]

The bulk of the story details the plight of a large group of people who become trapped while shopping in the town supermarket, among them a commercial artist named David Drayton (the protagonist and narrator), David’s young son Billy, and their estranged neighbor Brenton Norton, who accompanied them into town after his car was smashed by a tree. [7]

While at no point does The Mist ever even come close to being as depressingly bland as the average Stephen King miniseries, it does feel more like a large-scale television production than a feature horror film at times, right down to the repeated fade-to black between scenes. [1]

Directing three Stephen King movies (four, if you count an early short film) wasn’t enough for Frank Darabont. [5]

Of course, much of this shift in tone can be attributed to the fact that while his previous King adaptations were unabashedly cinematic thanks in large part to the visual contributions of cinematographers David Tattersall and Roger Deakens, this time out Darabont has instead opted to work with the same crew he bonded with during his work on The Shield. [1]

In the second issue of the Marvel Comics series The Dark Tower: The Gunslinger Born (a project overseen by King), the short prose story at the end of the book details events similar to those that occur in The Mist. [7]

But it is a strong, emotionally draining movie with an ending that would make Stephen King proud (and apparently, it has). [6]

nfl scores week 3

Monday, September 27th, 2010

Welcome to NFL game day for the 2010 regular season here on Bleacher Report (B/R), where I will be looking at various games, matchups, players, random thoughts, and much more over the next seven hours on a football Sunday. [1]

Jaguars QB David Garrard is feeling the pressure after a four-interception game, but with the loss of Luke McCown (torn ACL) last week, coach Jack Del Rio has run out of options. [...] WHAT TO WATCH FOR: Instead of blitzing Rams rookie QB Sam Bradford, the Redskins are going to drop into coverage, believing that Danny Amendola and Mark Clayton can’t beat the Washington secondary. [...] WHAT TO WATCH FOR: After looking at the tape of last week’s win in Detroit on Monday night, Eagles coach Andy Reid had no choice but to start Michael Vick. [...] The spread allows Vick to pick his own opportunities or simply stay with the play called. [...] What’s interesting about the quarterback switch is that Vick and Kevin Kolb are good friends. [...] They did talk to the Chargers about Vincent Jackson, but in the end were reluctant to part with two draft picks for a player of questionable character. [...] To deal with Steven Jackson, DT Albert Haynesworth will play in the regular rotation besides his customary nickel pass-rush role. [...] Redskins QB McNabb, who passed for 426 yards last week, will test the Rams in the deep middle where James Butler is playing for SS Craig Dahl while Kevin Dockery is starting at right cornerback. [...] They did re-sign Todd Bouman, 38, who was coaching high school football in Minnesota, to be the backup. [...] Arizona coach Ken Whisenhunt has taken a run-first approach with his offense, not knowing what Derek Anderson will do consistently. [2]

Cincinnati at Carolina: The Jimmy Clausen era starts today and again the Panthers will try to help him by getting their two running backs, DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart, untracked against a Bengals defense that is allowing 4.9 yards a carry after two games. [...] Vick heads into the Jacksonville game ranked fourth in the league in passing with a 105.5 passer rating. [...] They passed on Holmes, whom the Jets stole from Pittsburgh, for the same reason. ricardo antonio chavira

Monday, September 27th, 2010

Ricardo Antonio Chavira (born September 1, 1971) is an American actor, perhaps best known for his role as Carlos Solis on Desperate Housewives. [1]

Best known as Carlos Solis, the unapologetically macho (and unwittingly cuckolded) husband of suburbanite Gabrielle Solis (firecracker Eva Longoria) on the American series phenomenon Desperate Housewives, Texas-born actor Ricardo Antonio Chavira rode the crest of that role from obscurity to national recognition. [2]

A native of San Antonio, TX, Ricardo Antonio Chavira has worked consistently in all areas of the entertainment industry - film, television and theatre - since arriving in Los Angeles. [3]

You may be especially riveted by story lines involving two of the Alamo City’s own: Eva Longoria Parker and Ricardo Antonio Chavira. [4]

Raised in San Antonio, Texas, he graduated from Robert E. Lee High School, now the Performing Arts School, and the University of the Incarnate Word. [1]

A graduate of San Antonio’s famed Robert E. Lee High School, Chavira reportedly pursued drama at an early age as a clever way to meet women, but in the process discovered a love of the acting craft. [2]

Born on September 1, 1971 and raised in San Antonio, Texas, Ricardo Antonio Chavira attended the Robert E. Lee High School (now known as the Performing Arts School). [...] He relocated to Los Angeles shortly after completing his academics, and since then, has worked steadily in the film, television and theater industries. [5]

Fun side note: Prepare to do a double take when you first spot Chavira onscreen. [4]

I thought it had the perfect Desperate Housewives blend of drama and comedy. [...] That scene between Felicity Huffman and Doug Savant with Lynette and Tom fighting in bed, the one that led them to get Lynette to the hospital, was a prime example of two actors at their very best. [...] Yes, Edie is not one of the four main housewives, but the show would not be the same without her. [6]

Since then he has worked in film, television and theatre. [...] Chavira was born in Austin, Texas, the son of a Bexar County judge, Juan Antonio Chavira. [1]

Chavira has been involved in the cause since he was 15 years old, the time when his mother, Elizabeth Ries Chavira, lost her own battle with breast and ovarian cancer. [5]
