Visit Amazon’s DeBarge Store for 13 albums, photos, discussions, and more. [1]

By 1985, DeBarge had become pop/R&B sensations with mostly ballads making the repertoire of their hit catalog though they were as impressive as live performers with their mixture of their trademark soft ballads and a collection of dance material. [2]

Other good tracks are the sister song to the title track, latin fused “Heart is not so Smart”, the uptempo “Prime Time”, the soft duet classic “Share my World” with El and Bunny taking control and the offbeat “Walls (Come Tumbling Down) which has been a favorite of R&B acts looking to sample. [1]

Particularly devoted to the dancefloors, it had a great success, reaching the highest positions in various Singles Charts around the world. [3]

Eventually released as a single, the song produced DeBarge’s biggest success yet with the single reaching number three on the Billboard Hot 100, number one on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart,. [2]

Debarge will always remain one of my favorite groups of all time………..Highlights on this album are Who’s Holding Donna Now,Rhythm Of The Night,The Heart Is Not So Smart,Share My World, and You Wear It Well……I remember buying this album on vinyl when it was released and still have it to this day……Make sure you pick up a copy of this album today!!!!! [1]

It also reached #11 on the U.S. Billboard chart. [...] In the United Kingdom it was released in September 1994 and reached #2, kept off by Whigfield - Saturday Night, and stayed in the UK Singles Chart for 18 weeks. [...] It was the first single from their 1994 debut album The Rhythm of the Night. [3]

Some big hits here including the title track, the ballad “Who’s holding Donna Now” which shows El in top vocal form, the funky Chico DeBarge contribution “You wear it Well”. [1]

The song is said to have been what jump started the career of songwriter Diane Warren and was the biggest hit recorded by the Motown family singing group. [...] Motown Records sought to produce DeBarge with a dance single to give them a bigger crossover success that mirrored that of label-mate Lionel Richie, who like DeBarge, had created his initial fan base on soft songs before the release of “All Night Long “, which included a catchy dance beat influenced by calypso. [2]

In 2008, the song was covered by Hermes House Band, and reached number 16 in France. [3]

Richard Perry, the hit producer behind hit recordings for The Pointer Sisters and other artists, was appointed to produce the single with Diane Warren as its writer. [...] A similar influence would come in the production of “Rhythm of the Night” which featured more of El DeBarge’s deep tenor with flashes of his trademark falsetto. [2]

chico debarge

Following a tour and an appearance on the Punky Brewster show, Bobby and younger brother Chico DeBarge, then riding high off the success of his single, “Talk to Me”, was arrested in Grand Rapids, Michigan for drug trafficking serving five years in prison in Milan. [1]

Chico DeBarge is a member of the legendary DeBarge family of singers and musicians, which was active as a group from the late 1970s through the late 1980sh. [2]

Jonathan Arthur “Chico” DeBarge (born June 23, 1966 in Detroit, Michigan) is an American R&B singer and a younger brother of the members of the Motown family act DeBarge. [3]

Brother to the singing DeBarge family, Chico launched a promising solo career on Motown in the late ’80s. [4]

The remaining brothers soldiered on with their older brother Bobby (who’d long since left Switch) now joining the band to release the album Bad Boys in 1987, but it didn’t achieve nearly the success of previous releases. [1]

Despite a hit single and a hit debut album, his career was sidelined by imprisonment on a drug charge. [4]

Although the album included the Top 10 R&B/Top 21 pop hit “Talk to Me,” it only peaked at No. 90 on the Billboard albums chart. [2]

Active as a professional recording group between 1979 and 1989, the group was one of the few recording acts to bring success to the Motown label during the 1980s. [...] Meanwhile, El went on to have a moderately successful solo career, and Bunny would score a minor hit with “Save the Best for Me (Best of Your Lovin’)” from her only solo album before being abruptly dropped by her label. [1]

Featuring lead vocals from Randy and El, the song raced up to number two on the Billboard R&B singles chart while also crossing over to pop radio eventually peaking at number 31 on the Billboard Hot 100. [5]

Around the same time, Chico’s brothers Randy, Marty and Tommy, and sister Bunny all struggled with alcohol and drug abuse. [2]

Led by the soft-and-sweet vocals of Eldra (or El, for short), DeBarge issued a debut album in 1981, The DeBarges, which showed that the group had yet to hone their hit-making style. [5]

His older siblings include singers El DeBarge and Bunny DeBarge, plus Tommy & Bobby DeBarge (who were also in the band Switch). [2]

He released a second album with Motown, Kiss Serious, but was imprisoned for drug charges not long after and served time in prison for drug trafficking. [3]

The band signed on with the same label that the Jacksons started with, Motown, courtesy of their two older brothers, Tommy and Bobby (both of whom were members of another Motown act at the time, Switch). [5]

el debarge

Monday, June 28th, 2010

Eldra Patrick “El” DeBarge (born June 4, 1961) is an American R&B and soul falsetto singer and was the focal point and lead singer of the family group DeBarge throughout the early to mid-1980s. [1]

Boasting two top ballads, the title cut and “I Like It,” All This Love featured smooth group harmonies behind El DeBarge’s attractive first tenor and light Pop/Soul arrangements. [2]

According to DeBarge Family members, eldebarge.net is not El’s “official” website. [3]

The bi-racial family group DeBarge had the looks, the vocal talent and the backing of Motown that vaulted it quickly to the top of the Pop and Soul worlds in 1982. [2]

The remaining brothers soldiered on with their older brother Bobby (who’d long since left Switch) now joining the band to release the album Bad Boys in 1987, but it didn’t achieve nearly the success of previous releases. [4]

The quintet was quickly groomed as heir to the family group throne occupied by the Jackson 5 a decade earlier, and its second Motown album, 1982’s All This Love, appeared to deliver on the promise. [2]

In 1983, DeBarge’s album, titled In a Special Way garnered yet more success for the group, again with El producing, writing and singing lead in most of the songs, including the hit singles “Time Will Reveal” and “Love Me in a Special Way.” [1]

Andrew is releasing his new album soon! [3]

Meanwhile, El went on to have a moderately successful solo career, and Bunny would score a minor hit with “Save the Best for Me (Best of Your Lovin’)” from her only solo album before being abruptly dropped by her label. [4]

Led by the soft-and-sweet vocals of Eldra (or El, for short), DeBarge issued a debut album in 1981, The DeBarges, which showed that the group had yet to hone their hit-making style. [...] Featuring lead vocals from Randy and El, the song raced up to number two on the Billboard R&B singles chart while also crossing over to pop radio eventually peaking at number 31 on the Billboard Hot 100. [5]

Leaving Motown for Striped Horse Records in 1987, they recruited older brother Bobby, who had been mentoring the group following his split from Switch in 1981, as a member releasing their final album, Bad Boys. [...] Active as a professional recording group between 1979 and 1989, the group was one of the few recording acts to bring success to the Motown label during the 1980s. [4]

The cut went to number one, and he soon left the group to begin a solo career. [2]

His eponymous debut album was an attractive mixture of pop and soul, fashioned in the style of Michael Jackson, on whom DeBarge has modelled his career. [6]
