“It’s a fantastic thing,” says ABBA’s Bjorn Ulvaeus, right, with regard to the group’s impending Rock Hall induction. [2]

The Stooges, Genesis and ABBA lead the list of artists that will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame next year at a March 15, 2010 ceremony held once again at New York City’s Waldorf Astoria. [3]

The nominees also include such first-timers as long-running rock act Genesis, reggae legend Jimmy Cliff, early rock band the Hollies and singer/songwriter Laura Nyro. [5]

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has garnered criticism for allegedly allowing the nomination process to be controlled by a few individuals, nominating too many artists in too many genres that are not entirely rock, ignoring entire rock genres, and using technicalities to induct groups who may not have been among the top vote getters. [6]

“There are disco bands, rap bands, Yiddish folk song bands in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but not Kiss,” Gene Simmons said last year. [1]

New inductees are honored at an annual ceremony held either in New York or every three years at the Hall of Fame in Cleveland. [6]

While the museum is located in Cleveland, prior to 2009 the induction ceremony was annually held in New York City (except in 1993, when the ceremony was held in Los Angeles, and in 1997, when the ceremony was held in Cleveland). [4]

The New York City-based Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation, which oversees the inductions, announced the honorees today. [2]

Among their best-known songs are “Waterloo,” “Mamma Mia,” “SOS,” “Ring Ring,” “Honey, Honey” and “Fernando.” [5]

They’ll be enshrined during the Rock Hall’s 25th annual induction ceremony Monday, March 15, at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in Manhattan. [2]

According to a press release from the Rock Hall, the 12-member nominee class has some repeat offenders as well, including disco diva Donna Summer, girl-group icons Darlene Love and the Chantels, 1970s pop superstars ABBA and punk godfathers the Stooges (hoping the eighth time will be the charm).
