offsides in hockey

Sunday, February 28th, 2010

Overall, the skill development of players competing under any offsides rule still relies on the coach to instruct his or her team on the importance of puck possession. [1]

In ice hockey, play is said to be offside if a player on the attacking team enters the attacking zone before the puck itself enters the zone, either carried by a teammate or sent into the attacking zone by an attacking player. [2]

Sports An offside motion or play. [3]

No player can enter his offensive zone (cross the blue line) before the puck does, if he does, an offside is called. [4]

Also, a pass made across a blue line and the center line is ruled an offside pass, also referred to as a two-line pass. [5]

They usually occurs several times a game, but the players try to avoid them as much as possible, because an offside may ruin a potential scoring chance, and they can loose possession of the puck if they loose the face-off. [...] Yahoo! does not evaluate or guarantee the accuracy of any Yahoo! Answers content. [...] The ice is separated into three parts:a teams defensive zone, the neutral zone, and the offensive zone. [4]

An offside penalty is called if any player on the offensive hockey team is too far ahead of the puck. [6]

Definition: If a player precedes the puck into the offensive zone, play is called and a faceoff takes place in the neutral zone. [5]

This June, USA Hockey will again debate which offsides rule will be in effect for the 2007-08 and 2008-09 seasons. [...] This is an incentive for the attacking team to remain in control of the puck and regroup or make a play to keep control of the puck. [1]

Sports Illegally ahead of the ball or puck in the attacking zone. [3]

… if an attacking player is attempting to shoot the puck into the attacking zone and it deflects off a defending player, an offside violation can still occur. [2]

In order to avoid an offside penalty, you must always stay between the puck and your team’s goal. [6]
