who s afraid of virginia woolf

‘Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf’ tells the story of two couples that are quite different at first sight - one used to each other for years, the other one rather freshly wed in comparison. [1]

“Who’s Afraid Of Virginia Woolf” has become an absolute icon of American cinema. [2]

The original cast featured Uta Hagen as Martha, Arthur Hill as George, Melinda Dillon as Honey and George Grizzard as Nick. [3]

At two o’clock in the morning, George and Martha return from a faculty party at Martha’s father’s house. [4]

Including posters, Academy Awards history, film genres, film terms, film history by decade, trivia, and lots of lists of ‘best’ films, stars, scenes, quotes, resources, etc. [...] The names of the two major characters, George and Martha, are those of the first US President and his wealthy wife - a marriage of convenience. [5]

You are cordially invited to George and Martha's for an evening of fun and games. [2]

George insults Martha one more time, to which she replies, “SCREW YOU,” just as George opens the door to reveal Nick and Honey. [4]

The film’s title refers to Virginia Woolf (1882-1941), an influential British feminist writer who pioneered the ’stream of consciousness’ literary style while examining the psychological and emotional motives of her characters. [5]

It’s a dramatic film, but the wicked humour that permeates the film is absolutely devastating, and I mean that in the best possible way. [2]

Nick (who is never addressed or introduced by name) is a biology professor (who Martha thinks teaches math), and Honey is his mousy, brandy-abusing wife. [3]

This is still an exceptional film from the 1960s. [...] The physical transformation she undertook to become aging harpy Martha is amazing enough, but her performance seems to channel a hurricane’s force and fury. [1]

As the two come in, Nick tells Honey that they should not have come, which George insincerely denies. [4]
