west palm beach implosion

Wise has been helping plan the implosion for months. [1]

WEST PALM BEACH - It could be a scene out of a disaster flick: The implosion of a 30-story tower in a metropolis’ downtown goes wrong, destroying neighboring condos and wreaking havoc on a major byway. [2]

Cathleen McFarlane Ross is inviting friends to view the implosion of the 1515 Tower from her Palm Beach mansion. [...] It’s not every day that a 30-story building is destroyed in 6.5 seconds, so Cathleen McFarlane Ross is inviting her friends to watch Sunday’s implosion from her Palm Beach mansion on Worth Avenue. [3]

While the city won’t set up an official viewing area, spectators can watch the implosion from any public area outside the zone. [4]

The city of West Palm Beach is warning people not to expect to get close to the 1515 tower during Sunday’s implosion. [1]

Residents in condos outside of the 500-foot danger zone, but within a 750-foot buffer zone, will be able to remain in their condos, but will have to stay inside during the implosion. [...] Police will guard the streets around 1515 S. Flagler, keeping spectators out of the 750-foot buffer zone. [4]

“It’s a lot taller and a lot more narrow and a lot tighter site,” city services director Doug Wise said. [1]

A crowd of 100,000 spectators watched in horror as debris from the implosion flew more than 1,500 feet, killing a 12-year-old girl and injuring nine other people. [2]

“We don’t even really have a place to put them, and it could get out of control,” Wise said. [3]

Officials of Advanced Explosives Demolition (AED), the company handling the 1515 job, said they’ve never had a serious problem in more than 1,000 implosions. [2]

She said she has already received an offer of a $2,500 donation from one person planning to view the 1515 S. Flagler Drive condo tower come down across the Lake Worth Lagoon from her backyard. [...] So there will be no official viewing area, although spectators can watch from any public area that is at least 750 feet away. [3]

But experts and city officials are telling people to relax, that this is arguably the safest way to take down a building. [2]
