jagged little pill

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

It’s remarkable that Alanis Morissette ’s Jagged Little Pill struck a sympathetic chord with millions of listeners, because it’s so doggedly, determinedly insular. [1]

Canadian-American singer-songwriter Alanis Morissette was propelled to international stardom with the release of Jagged Little Pill (1995), an accomplished album of radio-friendly rock that seemed to dominate the charts and airwaves forever. [2]

Jagged Little Pill is the third studio album (and the first to be released internationally) by Canadian singer Alanis Morissette. [3]

The album garnered great success, spending twelve non-consecutive weeks at number one on the U.S. Billboard 200 albums chart, and became one of only five albums ‘ along with Thriller by Michael Jackson, Falling into You by C?line Dion, All the Right Reasons by Nickelback, and Fearless by Taylor Swift ‘ to remain in the top ten for over a year. [...] The album is considered one of the most successful albums of all time for its many commercial achievements, received awards and cultural resonance, worldwide. [4]

This limited availability led to a dispute between Maverick Records and HMV Canada, who retaliated by removing from sale Morissette’s other albums for the duration of Starbucks’ exclusive month-long sale. [...] The album’s single in the U.S. was “Hand in My Pocket “. [5]

As slick as the music is, the lyrics are unvarnished and Morissette unflinchingly explores emotions so common, most people would be ashamed to articulate them. [1]

Experience has been one of her teachers, as described in the song You Learn. [6]

In October 2002, Rolling Stone ranked it number 31 on its Women In Rock - The 50 Essential Albums list, and in 2003 the magazine ranked it number 327 on its list of The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. [3]

Often, it seems like Glen Ballard ’s pop inclinations fight against Alanis’ exorcisms, as her bitter diary entries are given a pop gloss that gives them entry to the pop charts. [1]

Harsh, angry, a little perverted, cursed with a couple of those silly bleeps radio stations just have to use - this was something different, and it just so happened to rock, as well. [6]

The turning point in their sessions was the song “Perfect”, which was written and recorded in 20 minutes. [4]

She never disguises her outright rage and disgust, whether it’s the vengeful wrath of “You Oughta Know” or asking him “you scan the credits for your name and wonder why it’s not there.” [1]

During the overdub sessions, Flea and Dave Navarro (then Red Hot Chili Peppers bandmates) appeared at the studio, discovered Morissette’s work, and offered to play on “You Oughta Know “. [4]

alanis morissette

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

Alanis Morissette’s 1991 album Alanis, a collection of danceable pop ditties, was a big hit in Canada and won Morissette a Juno music award while she was still a teenager. [1]

Alanis Morissette was born in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, to school teachers Alan and Georgia Morissette. [...] Alanis Nadine Morissette (born June 1, 1974) is a seven time Grammy Award-winning Canadian singer-songwriter of alternative rock /pop music and occasional actress. [2]

… she bolstered that formula with enough pop sensibility, slight hip-hop flourishes, and marketing savvy to become a superstar with her third album, Jagged Little Pill. [3]

As a testament to what was often perceived as her “precocious” talent, her first year as winning Grammy artist, she became (and remains) the youngest-ever winner of the “Album of the Year” Grammy. [4]

A dozen years after the breakthrough debut of Jagged Little Pill, an album which earned four Grammys and spawned a dedicated worldwide fan base, Alanis Morissette remains not only an enduringly popular artist, but one whose success stems from a fierce commitment to authenticity and, to an equal extent, vulnerability. [5]

Alanis Nadine Morissette (born 1 June 1974) is a Canadian -American singer-songwriter, record producer and actress. [4]

Morissette was born in Ottawa, Canada, and began playing piano and writing songs during her childhood years. [3]

Morissette began her career in Canada, and as a teenager recorded two dance-pop albums, Alanis and Now Is the Time, under MCA Records. [4]

In the mid-1990s she reinvented herself as a mournful rock goddess; her 1995 album Jagged Little Pill sold millions, won four Grammy awards and rocketed her to fame on MTV and around the world. [1]

Her passions also include women’s issues and artists’ rights on behalf of which she has written several articles as well as spoken to congress. [5]

With the money saved from her stint on the children’s television show You Can’t Do That On Television, Morissette released an indie single Fate Stay With Me with the B-side Find The Right Man. [2]

Nearly two dozen songs were born from writing sessions in London and Los Angeles, a baker’s dozen selected for the final cut of Flavors of Entanglement. [5]

Her other albums include Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie (1998, with the single “Thank You”), Alanis Unplugged (1999) and Under Rug Swept (2002). [1]

After some hosting issues and timing, we WILL be coming back, look for updated content in the next few weeks! [6]

green day broadway american idiot

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

American Idiot cast members will be live tweeting from the Grammy Awards tomorrow! [1]

After an acclaimed world premiere at Berkeley Repertory Theatre, the new musical American Idiot will officially rock Broadway. [2]

American Idiot is a stage interpretation of Green Day’s 2004, Grammy-winning rock opera of the same name. [3]

After a successful eight-week run at the Berkeley Repertory Theater in California, Green Day ’s ‘American Idiot’ musical will officially be taking the Broadway stage this year, producers of the musical announced Wednesday. [4]

After months of speculation, it has been officially announced that American Idiot, the musical based on Green Day’s 2004 CD, will make its Broadway debut on April 20 at the St. James Theatre. [5]

“Wildly entertaining… The music of Green Day practically blasts the lid off Berkeley Rep’s Roda Theatre…in a world premiere with Broadway aspirations written all over it,” said the San Francisco Chronicle. [3]

Producers of the show — playing at Berkeley Repertory through Sunday — have put out a casting notice in New York, and promoters said that “American Idiot” is indeed coming to Broadway, according to Playbill. [6]

Plans are afoot to bring the musical to Broadway in 2010. [7]

Based on the Grammy Award winning album of the same name, American Idiot follows working-class characters from the suburbs to the city to the Middle East as they seek redemption in a world filled with frustration. [2]

The musical “American Idiot,” which features songs from the original album, is directed by Michael Mayer. [8]

The musical made its theatre debut this past September at the Berkeley Repertory Theatre in the band’s home state of California. [3]

After the show wrapped, we headed straight to Oakland with the cast to record, and they sung the hell out of it. [7]

The move to New York follows a sell-out run last fall at the Berkeley Repertory Theatre in California. [8]

Producers Tom Hulce and Ira Pittelman announced today that following the record-breaking and critically acclaimed engagement at Berkeley Rep, the production will begin previews on Wednesday, March 24, 2010 and open on Broadway Tuesday, April 20, 2010 at the St. James Theatre (246 West 44 Street). [9]

Both the song and video feature the members of Green Day, singer-guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong, bassist Mike Dirnt, and drummer Tre Cool, recording in the studio with the cast of American Idiot - the critically acclaimed stage version of Green Day’s chart-topping 2004 album that completed a record-breaking three-month run at The Berkeley Repertory Theatre and is now moving to Broadway where it opens on April 20.
