duty honor country

Duty, Honor, Country is the acceptance speech given by General Douglas MacArthur at West Point on 12 May 1962 on the occasion of his receiving the Sylvanus Thayer Award. [1]

Duty, Honor, Country: Those three hallowed words reverently dictate what you ought to be, what you can be, what you will be. [2]

Duty, honor, country: Those three hallowed words reverently dictate what you ought to be, what you can be, what you will be. [3]

In defining the significance of duty, honor, country, to the Corps at West Point–in reaffirming the role of the soldier in American life–the 82 year old MacArthur was, in part, responding to an address the previous year by the new President, John F. Kennedy, which had suggested a changing role for America’s professional soldiers. [4]

The first coherent thought that I mustered after recovering from the rage and embarrassment that I felt upon reading those words was the quote from General MacArthur 45 year ago: “Duty”, “Honor”, “Country”. [5]

But this award is not intended primarily to honor a personality, but to symbolize a great moral code — the code of conduct and chivalry of those who guard this beloved land of culture and ancient descent. [2]

[This beautiful and inspiring tribute to the American man at arms, and to the Military Academy at West Point, by one of the latter's most distinguished graduates, was surely one of the most eloquent speeches by any American in the 20th Century. [4]

Recalled to active duty during World War II, he was commander of the Southwest Pacific Area during the greater part of the war. [3]

But this award is not intended primarily to honor a personality, but to symbolize a great moral code–the code of conduct and chivalry of those who guard this beloved land of culture and ancient descent. [4]

However horrible the incidents of war may be, the soldier who is called upon to offer and to give his life for his country, is the noblest development of mankind. [1]

As I listened to those songs [of the glee club], in memory’s eye I could see those staggering columns of the First World War, bending under soggy packs, on many a weary march from dripping dusk to drizzling dawn, slogging ankle-deep through the mire of shell-shocked roads, to form grimly for the attack, blue-lipped, covered with sludge and mud, chilled by the wind and rain, driving home to their objective, and for many, to the judgment seat of God. [2]

However hard the incidents of war may be, the soldier who is called upon to offer and to give his life for his country, is the noblest development of mankind. [4]

“Duty, Honor, Country -those three hallowed words reverently dictate what you want to be, what you can be, what you will be. [5]

They are your rallying points to build courage when courage seems to fail, to regain faith when there seems to be little cause for faith, to create hope when hope becomes forlorn. [1]

Kelly Ann, I agree with you and with Terri that student motivation is critical to success. [1]

Puck (San Francisco) is still living in the San Fernando Valley. [2]

Finally an episode where there isn’t any drama. [...] There’s the obvious alliance between Cara (South Pacific) and Susie (Australia), leaving Paula (Key West) to be the most likely girl to be sent to the Inferno. [...] While Jenn was trying to convince Aneesa that the final mission may involve some serious strenuous exertion that may put stress on her knee, Aneesa tried to reassure Jenn that she was willing to take that risk. [3]

Jon (Los Angeles) is still living in Kentucky. [2]

Now that the cast is done filming and has returned to the States, most of them probably have been chatting with close friends and family about their time Down Under. [...] Tonight at 10pm, MTV will run the premiere episode reuniting Alton, Arissa, Brynn, Frank, Irulan, Steven and Trishelle. [...] Last week, MTVisReal revealed Kelly Ann’s (Sydney) MySpace website. [3]

MTV is Real is posting pictures of Kelly Ann (Sydney) and yet another unidentified castmember. [2]

Castmembers from Las Vegas, Viewers Revenge, and Denver have all been approached to appear on this next Challenge. [3]

MM Agency reveals that Puck is in talks to do his own show on VH1. [...] Ruthie (Hawaii) is living in Los Angeles. [2]

This season could begin filming as early as this month and begin airing on MTV as early as this Fall. [3]

Yesterday, VH1 ran a special about former reality television stars and what they’re up to now. [2]

This site is all about my recent trip to Chernobyl exclusion zone. [1]

Looking into the debris-filled reactor (look for the inverted lid on the left). [2]

It is really very simple, and the device we use for measuring radiation levels is called a geiger counter. [3]

Excellent colour photo of Chernobyl, right after the explosions. [2]

For anyone who wants to skip to the photos, remember, any photo you can click on, zooming in. [1]

Colour photo of the exterior of the Chernobyl power plant shortly after the explosion, just outside the Russian town of Pripyat. [2]

In the first days after explosion, some places around the reactor were emitting 3,000-30,000 roentgens per hour. [...] In the center of many European cities are 20 microR per hour, the radioactivity of the stone. [3]

The road to zone, road signs, office where tour company gave us a little bit of history, explained safety, and (of course) charged us money. [1]

I travel a lot and one of my favorite destinations leads North from Kiev, towards so called Chernobyl “dead zone”, which is 130kms from my home. [...] It is not retained by asphalt, which makes rides through this area possible. [3]

It was prohibited taking pictures of personnel manning this checkpoint. [1]

A fascinating look at Kiev’s history of defending itself with the aid of a wall built most likely during the early 11th century at the request of King Yaroslav(he built upon the fortification work begun under the reign of Volodymyr Svyatoslavovich in the late 10th century). [...] A dose of 500 roentgens within 5 hours is fatal to humans. [3]

They had to file application for 3 passes, one for Zone 2 (this checkpoint), 1 for Zone 1 (KPP Leliv, shown later), and one for Pripyat city. [1]

Twilight of Honor - Our records indicate this title is not available on Home Video. [2]

Twilight of Honor is a 1963 film starring Richard Chamberlain, Nick Adams, Claude Rains, and featuring Joey Heatherton and Linda Evans in their film debuts. [3]

Based on a novel by Al Dewlen, Twilight of Honor was released in Britain as The Charge is Murder. [4]

Twilight of Honor (1963) was M-G-M’s attempt to make a feature film star out of Richard Chamberlain, TV’s Dr. Kildare. [...] Twilight of Honor was the rare straight dramatic score by Johnny Green (billed here as “John”) in the latter stage of his career, which otherwise comprised musical direction and conducting. [5]

In 1963 Chamberlain was instantly recognizable from his Dr. Kildare role on television, so it was only natural that MGM would try to parlay his small-screen talents into movie success. [6]

Cole Clinton, the leading citizen of Durango, New Mexico, is brutally murdered, and young attorney David Mitchell is appointed by the court to defend suspect Ben Brown. [2]

Former TV leading man Richard Chamberlain plays a young lawyer about to take on an important murder case. [4]

Twilight of Honor is a courtroom drama based on Al Dewlen ’s novel, with a screenplay by Henry Denker. [3]

This Flash movie requires a newer version of the Flash plug-in. [...] Although he initially believes that Brown is guilty, Mitchell begins to have doubts about the written confession authorities have obtained because it seriously conflicts with the story Brown personally tells; Mitchell’s only encouragement, however, comes from retired attorney Art Harper and his daughter, Susan. [2]

FSM PLEADS NOT GUILTY…of ignoring two classic scores for films involving courtroom drama, by renowned composers George Duning and Johnny Green, respectively. [5]

Richard Chamberlain as a fearless trial lawyer in a drama of love, courage, and murder! [1]
