After the relatively light-hearted goings-on last week, the emotional content of this episode certainly hit home ever harder the further it progressed, with Winry’s breakdown over a monologue about apple pie the heart-rending climax of the episode. [...] While Colonel Mustang tries to spare the Elric Brothers the pain of learning about his death just yet (somewhat foolishly it has to be said), they soon find out for themselves just moments later, with Ed inevitably blaming himself and his pursuit of the Philosopher’s Stone for the tragedy. He then orders the townspeople to attack and capture the Elrics; Ed transmutes some metal to look like Al, and allows himself to be captured, Cornello then takes Ed’s State-Alchemist’s pocket-watch, thinking it is Ed’s secret to performing Alchemy without a Transmutation Circle. While he may be rather advanced in years (sixty to be precise), he makes short work of Greed and his cohorts thanks to some impressive sword skills, while also giving us a glimpse of what lies behind that eye patch of his (it wasn’t a Halloween pop-out eye, which disappointed me greatly). [4]
