As of this writing, Vera Miles is still married to her fourth husband, sound engineer and mixer Bob Jones. [1]

She appeared in two television episodes that each revolved around the portrait of her character, first in “The Virginian” (1962) episode “Portrait of a Widow” (episode 3.13, December 9, 1964) and over a decade later in the “Ellery Queen” (1975) episode “The Adventure of the Two-Faced Woman” (episode 1.18, February 29, 1976). [2]

Born in Oklahoma, Vera Miles (born Vera Ralston, she had to change her name, as Republic Pictures’ resident leading lady Vera Ralston got to Hollywood first) attended school in Pratt and Wichita, Kansas. [3]

Although her first leads were in modest films, her earnest, outdoorsy heroines suited her well for “The Rose Bowl Story” (1952) and Jacques Tourneur’s stylish “Wichita” (1955). [4]

However much of her subsequent work, both in feature films and in television movies, has been in material considerably below her abilities. [3]

While making films at Republic studios, Ralston changed her name to avoid being confused with Republic’s reigning queen Vera Hruba Ralston; “Miles” was the last name of her first husband. [1]

Her third husband, Keith Larsen died on December 13, 2006; first husband/stuntman and small part actor Bob Miles died on April 12, 2007; and bodybuilder second husband actor Gordon Scott, who played Tarzan in films, died on April 30, 2007. [2]

Hitchcock, meanwhile, liked her work in “Revenge” (1955) on his “Alfred Hitchcock Presents” so much that he put her under personal contract. [4]

Mother of Erik Larsen, who was born on 30 April 1961 in Burbank, California. [2]

During the latter half of the 1950s, she was under contract to Alfred Hitchcock, who was impressed by the still waters run deep element of her performances. She played a delusional rape victim in “Revenge,” the very first episode of TV’s Alfred Hitchcock Presents; she was cast as Henry Fonda ’s beleaguered wife in Hitch’s The Wrong Man (her final scene is a knockout!); and, of course, she was seen as the sister of the ill-fated Janet Leigh in Psycho, a role she flamboyantly reprised in the 1982 sequel Psycho 2. [1]

She did later star as the woman who initiates the search for her missing sister (Janet Leigh) in Hitchcock’s landmark “Psycho” (1960). [...] As a wife who slowly cracks under the strain as her innocent husband (Henry Fonda) is imprisoned for armed robbery, Miles gave the film’s finest performance, and her stardom seemed set. [4]
