The Macy’s July 4th fireworks display originally made its debut on the Hudson River in 1958 before becoming an East River tradition in 1976. [1]

Each year Macy’s kicks off the world’s largest fireworks display at approximately 9pm on July 4th. [2]

The 2009 Macy’s fireworks show will feature more than 40,000 shells exploding at a rate of more than 1,500 per minute (that’s eight times more high-level fireworks than last year’s show). [1]

There are electric set pieces on the barges, and the New York Fire Department gets in on the act with fire boats shooting red, clear, and blue water 300 feet over the river. [2]

The legendary New York Pops will perform the musical score under the direction of Steve Reineke. [1]

Beginning at approximately 9:20 p.m., Macy’s will have fireworks being released from six barges in the Hudson River. [3]

As with all past years, no viewing is allowed from our East River Bridges. [5]

At approximately 9:20 pm on July 4th, the 26-minute display will be set off from six barges positioned between 24th and 50th Streets on the Hudson River. [1]
