pumi dog

The Pumi is a medium-small terrier -type breed of dog. [1]

Considered to be the town dog of Hungary, the Pumi is relatively rare in North America. [2]

A Pumi is a square-looking, active dog, light-bodied and racey, who looks heavier than he is due to a longish, curly coat. [3]

A multi-functional dog, it is also favored by owners because of its happy and cheerful disposition. [4]

As a working dog, it was quite freely bred until the 1970s, and other Hungarian dogs such as the Puli and Mudi were used for breeding. [...] This color is known as sable with mask in other breeds, such as the Terveuren. [1]

The Pumi is one of the lesser known breeds, perhaps because of its rustic appearance. [5]

If you are looking for Pumi puppies for sale from reputable Pumi breeders or to adopt a Pumi from a Pumi rescue then make sure you understand as much about the dog breeds you are interested in as you can. [2]

If you love the look and attitude of spunky terriers like the Wheaten Terrier, but enjoy the energy and intelligence of herding breeds, the Pumi (not to be confused with the Puli, another Hungarian breed) might be your perfect dog. [6]

In 2004 Pumi was accepted to the American Kennel Club Foundation Stock Service program, and the Hungarian Pumi Club of America was founded. [7]

So, without further ado, let’s take a look at the Hungarian Pumi! [6]

The Pumi shares a common history with the Puli, both are Hungarian herding dogs and considered the same breed until the turn of the twentieth century. [3]

These terrier-type dogs mixed with the Puli-type dogs that were in Hungary, and the result was a terrier-type herding dog. [1]

The Pumi began to emerge as a separate breed from lines of the more ancient Hungarian Puli in the late nineteenth century. [8]

It is thought that the Pumi type came from the interbreeding of the Pulis with a French or German type of terrier which gave it the square outline, narrower head, and livelier attitude. [3]
