pentecost sunday 2009

Many Christians in the United States observe Pentecost, also known as Whitsunday or Whit Sunday. [1]

After Easter Sunday, Christmas is the second-greatest feast in the Christian liturgical calendar, but Pentecost Sunday is not far behind. [2]

My brothers and sisters, from today’s readings that commemorates the Feast of Pentecost Sunday, we learn how, when, where and why the Holy Spirit was given to mankind. [3]

Fire, wind, and humble Galileans speaking persuasively in many tongues were dramatic signs that God was doing a new thing that would transform the lives of all those present, and far beyond, in time and place. [4]

At Pentecost, the disciples, filled by the Holy spirit, began to speak in other tongues through which people representing every nation under heaven heard the mighty works of God (Acts 2: 1-13). [5]

Our psalm reading for this Pentecost Sunday speaks of God sending forth God’s Spirit in a creative burst that is both productive and renewing. [4]

Pentecost Sunday, which marks the end of the Easter season in the Christian calendar, celebrates the descent of the Holy Spirit on the Apostles. [6]

Coming 50 days after Easter and ten days after the Ascension of Our Lord, Pentecost marks the descent of the Holy Spirit on the apostles. [2]

Pentecost is a Christian holy day commemorating the descent of the Holy Ghost upon the disciples of Jesus Christ, according to the New Testament of the Bible. [1]

By making the connection between the experience of the disciples and the “last days” reference from Joel, Peter places the event in an apocalyptic context. [...] The Pentecost readings, especially the one from Acts, describe the arrival of the Spirit as though it is a new thing. [7]

Now, elsewhere in the Bible, it says that Jesus is our advocate. [3]

The apostle Paul explains this as he reflects on His experience of building the early Christian communities. [5]

But the specificity of language and peoples suggest an alternative reading, one adopted by those who celebrate Pentecost as Pluralism Sunday. [7]

Today’s First Reading from The Acts Of The Apostles tells us that the promise of Jesus that I have just spoken about has been fulfilled. [3]
