TOKYO - A Filipino couple facing the threat of deportation have decided to leave their 13-year-old daughter behind in Japan and return to the Philippines following advice from the immigration authority, the family’s lawyer said Friday. [3]

The Japanese Immigration Bureau had given the teenager a harrowing choice - go with her parents back to their native Philippines where she’s never lived, or stay on in Japan without them. [1]

Calderon, who now goes to a junior high school run by the city of Warabi, Saitama Prefecture, said she had believed that she was Japanese until her 38-year-old mother, Sarah, was arrested in July 2006 for staying without a visa and the family was ordered to leave Japan. [2]

Now with her parents set to leave in April, just days after Noriko begins her second year at middle school on April 8, the girl will live with her aunt and uncle who have agreed to move to Saitama Prefecture from Tokyo to take care of her. [3]

Up to that moment, Noriko had believed that she was Japanese - she was born in Japan, she speaks only Japanese, she is pretty much indistinguishable from her classmates at the junior high school she attends. [6]
