Not by eating 60, but rather by attempting to consume a single ghost chili in one sitting at the behest of his editor. [2]

A study by the New Mexico State University Chile Pepper Institute had previously revealed that the bhut jolokia, also know as the “ghost chili,” has more than a million Scoville heat units (SHU)—the scientific measurement of a chili’s spiciness. [3]

The new stnack will contain Indian Bhut jolokia (”ghost chili”), which was recognized last year with the Guinness World Record for spiciest chili pepper. [4]

Use them sparingly, add a little to fresh salsa, sauces, chili and anything else you want to start a 12 alarm fire with. [6]

A 2005 Indian study that compared the percentage availability of capsaicin and dihydrocapsaicin in Naga Jolokia peppers grown in both Tezpur (Assam) and Gwalior (Madhya Pradesh) showed that the heat of the pepper is decreased by over 50% in Gwalior’s more arid climate (similar temperatures but less humid, much lower rainfall). [7]

The locals have been eating this pepper for generations, besides its use as a spice it is used to cure stomach troubles and also a way to fight the summer heat ranging in excess of 130 deg Fahrenheit. [...] And I thought the Habanero and the Jalapeno was something, this one is surely putting them to shame! [8]
