For a nation firmly trapped in the icy grip of the American-Soviet Cold War of the 1950s, The 27th Day (1957) offered audiences a suitably chilling movie experience. [3]

The five are then presented with a case containing three capsules, each capsule capable of emitting lethal radiation that will kill all human life within a 3,000 mile radius. [1]

The 27th Day is the story of what happens when a representative of a much-advanced alien race comes to Earth and forces its inhabitants to come to grips with possible annihilation, courtesy of a set of capsules which contain the power to kill everyone on the planet. [3]

Each capsule is given to a citizen of a different country. [4]

[...] This Flash movie requires a newer version of the Flash plug-in. [1]

The 27th Day began life as a novel by Canadian-born writer John Mantley who, after completing service in the Royal Canadian Air Force during WWII, decided to try acting as a career. [3]

the 1031 project

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

TM 1031 Exchange writes articles that are published in newspapers throughout the United States. [...] It should be understood that although the format of obtaining the replacement property may be different, the basic rules of a 1031 exchange tax deferral must be met. [1]

Private Equity Group specializes in real estate 1031 exchanges, 1031 exchange replacement properties, and investment-grade Tenant-In-Common (TIC) programs. [2]

The Advantage of a 1031 Exchange is the ability of a taxpayer to sell income, investment or business property and replace with like-kind replacement property without having to pay federal income taxes on the transaction. [...] The tax basis of replacement property is essentially the purchase price of the replacement property minus the gain which was deferred on the sale of the relinquished property as a result of the exchange. [3]

The investor may add funds or debt financing if necessary. [1]

We also offer complementary products such as direct oil and gas drilling investments, oil and gas royalty and production programs, equipment leasing, real estate development funds, Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs), and estate planning. [2]

… transactions with a former spouse are normally subject to tax unless they qualify for nonrecognition under the provisions of Section 1031. [4]

The proceeds from the sale of the relinquished property are held by a qualified intermediary who then uses those pre-tax dollars to purchase the property to be upgraded or the land upon which the replacement property is to be built. [1]

Our expertise in hard-asset investing provides smart choices for portfolio and risk diversification. [2]

When you sell your business or investment real estate, replace it with a different business or investment property, and complete an exchange, you can defer payment of the capital gains tax normally required on these sales. [4]

In order to qualify for the tax deferral, the completed structure must match the identified structure very closely and be completed within the standard 180 day period allowed by the IRS to close on a replacement property. [...] The investor must submit detailed plans, including but not limited to any construction documents when identifying the property within the usual 45 day identification period. [...] If the project is not completed within the time frame allowed an investor may defer the amount of capital gains tax obligation on a prorated basis. [1]

A Section 1031 tax deferred exchange, named for the Internal Revenue Code Section it refers to (also known as a Starker Exchange, Tax Free Exchange, or Like-Kind exchange), allows an exception to the capital gains tax. [4]

virus tomorrow

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

Tomorrow, many Microsoft Windows users may discover that a difficult-to-eradicate computer virus has overwritten many of their computer files with zeros. [1]

That is when the worm will generate 50,000 domain names and systematically try to communicate with each one. [2]

The Conficker virus, which is thought to have infected up to 15million computers since last autumn, has so far lurked harmlessly - but it is said to be programmed to change the way it operates today. [3]

Also, please make sure every Windows machine is patched. [...] If they are already infected, the WORM prevents the anti-virus software from updating automatically and it prevents people from getting to security websites. [2]

Merely viewing an infected e-mail on Outlook will infect a computer. [1]

Experts are sceptical about whether today is the day the worm will turn, but urge the public to ensure their anti-virus software is up to date. [...] But there are fears the virus, which infects machines through the internet and via memory sticks, will be used to steal bank details, send spam emails or crash a major website by overloading it by redirecting all affected computers to it. [3]

“As the author says, it’s just the beginning: if today that means new macro viruses, tomorrow - new dangerous worms could endanger every system connected to the net,” he said. [4]

Graham Cluley, of internet security company Sophos, advises people to rid their machines of the worm as soon as they can. [...] Of course there are viruses for Macs but Macs are so much less likely to be targeted. [3]

“Because of such people who don’t realise the importance of this matter, new dangers could arise for all the people using the internet, either for work or for fun. [...] A bit of research reveals that this isn’t the first or only online virus generator in existence. [4]

What this means is that the end-users Windows OS will not update itself to fix the hole that the Worm is using. [2]

Taking the danger of idiot-friendly kits responsible for the likes of the Anna Kournikova virus one step further, vandals can now create a new virus in seconds without even downloading software. [4]

ny 20 special election

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

The special election in New York’s 20th district is just one week away and the level of national interest — and involvement — is growing rapidly. [1]

Next Tuesday, voters in New York’s 20th Congressional District will head to the polls for a special election to fill the seat left vacant when Representative Kirsten Gillibrand was appointed to fill Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s Senate seat. [2]

Polls are tight in the N.Y.-20 special election, where Democratic venture capitalist Scott Murphy battles Republican state legislator Jim Tedisco in a race that has a national tone. [...] Rachel Maddow talks to NBC News chief foreign correspondent Richard Engel about what to expect from Obama at the G-20 economic summit. [3]

A special election to fill the seat of former Representative Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) has turned ugly, with Democrat Scott Murphy attempting to win the race by tying his opponent to Rush Limbaugh. [...] The result: a potential referendum on the popularity of both Rush and Obama, rather than on the qualifications of the candidates themselves in the upstate New York district. [4]

ALBANY, N.Y. - Scott Murphy, the Democrat running for Congress in New York, says he opposes the death penalty, even for terrorists. [5]

On Tuesday, March 31st — just one week away — voters will have the chance to send Scott to Congress, where we’ll work together to get our economy moving in the right direction. [2]

Traditionally, the 20th district leaned conservative and was considered a safe Republican seat until Gillibrand defeated incumbent John E. Sweeney in 2006, Republicans now hope to retake this seat. [6]

And, looking forward to next year’s midterms, Republicans have touted it as an early barometer of their political health in the post-Bush era ‘ especially since it takes place in a region, the Northeast, where the GOP has found little recent success. [3]

We are of the belief that going positive when your opponent is still going negative usually is a mistake (candidates see their positive ratings falling and panic) but special elections are an entirely different animal and the traditional laws of politics don’t always apply. [1]

Sundwall’s exit leaves Republican James Tedisco and Democrat Scott Murphy as the only two candidates seeking the House seat formerly occupied by Kirsten Gillibrand, D-Greenport. [5]

On Tuesday, in upstate New York, Democrat Scott Murphy faces off against Republican Jim Tedisco in the special election to fill the seat in the 20th Congressional District vacated by Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., who was appointed to replace Hillary Clinton in the U.S. Senate. [3]

Jim Tedisco, the Republican candidate in the March 31 special election in the 20th Congressional District, supports the death penalty. [5]

At the same time, Murphy has touted a strangely understated Obama endorsement in campaign advertising. [4]
