The Keeling Curve is a graph showing the variation in concentration of atmospheric carbon dioxide since 1958. [2]

The Keeling Curve provided the first clear evidence that carbon dioxide was accumulating in the atmosphere as the result of humanity’s use of fossil fuels. [3]

Keeling was best known for his precise measurements of atmospheric carbon dioxide, charted above in the Keeling curve, one of the most recognizable images in modern science. [4]

The idea of making measurements at Mauna Loa arose while Charles David Keeling was a post-doc at Cal Tech. [5]

Keeling’s measurements showed the first significant evidence of rapidly increasing carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere. [1]

The rise of carbon dioxide gas in our atmosphere has been measured continuously since 1958 and follows an oscillating line known as the “Keeling Curve,” named after Dr. Charles David Keeling, professor at Scripps Institution of Oceanography. [6]

The inception of the “Keeling Curve,” a history of atmospheric carbon dioxide levels, marked a key moment in American science history. [3]

It is based on continuous measurements taken at the Mauna Loa Observatory in Hawaii under the supervision of Charles David Keeling. [1]

At a White House ceremony held in July 1997, Dr. Keeling was presented with a “special achievement award” from Vice President Al Gore. [7]

Carbon dioxide has risen continuously since then, and the average value when Dr. Keeling started his measurements in 1958 was near 315 ppmv. [6]

Science organizations around the world are joining Scripps in marking the anniversary. [3]

Many scientists credit Keeling’s graph with first bringing the world’s attention to the effects that human activity were having on the Earth’s atmosphere and climate. [2]

This program, operated out of Scripps Institution of Oceanography, is responsible for the Mauna Loa record, which is almost certainly the best-known icon illustrating the impact of humanity on the planet as a whole. [5]

The methods and equipment used to obtain these measurements have remained essentially unchanged during the 40-year monitoring program. [7]
