South Australian waters generally and West Coast waters in particular are frequented by the White Pointer shark (carcharodon carcharias). [1]

A 52-year-old woman has fought off a white pointer shark at Byron Bay in northern NSW, escaping with bite wounds to a hand. [...] Emergency services say the shark “menaced” the woman, a resident of the popular tourist town, knocking her out of her sea kayak and biting her on the hand while she was in the water. [2]

The great white shark, also known as white pointer, white shark, or white death, is an exceptionally large lamniform shark found in coastal surface waters in all major oceans. [5]

The great white typically hunts in the upper part of the ocean where seals and other usual prey swim, but it may dive for prey in deeper waters in the open sea. [3]

The upper teeth are large, broad, and triangular, while the lower teeth are slightly more slender. [4]

Compared to other shark species the great white shark is rare. [7]

The perpetuation of the species is slow, to say the least. [6]

Near the now-famous Seal Island, in South Africa’s False Bay; studies have shown that the shark attacks most often occur in the morning, within 2 hours after sunrise. [5]

Though great white attacks on humans are well documented, they are generally rare. [4]
