As an expression of glasnost (openness), the String Bands invited a persistent parade-lover/critic - that would be me - to sit in on some idea-bouncing, planning sessions. [2]

THE MUMMERS get it, they finally get it. [...] The traditional performance at St. Agnes Hospital will be axed, leaving guaranteed performances at Shunk Street, Methodist Hospital, Washington Avenue, Pine Street, the Union League and City Hall. [3]

Local clubs (usually called “New Years Associations”) compete in one of four categories (Comics, Fancies, String Bands, and Fancy Brigades). [...] To raise funds, many string bands and their members seek paying gigs, particularly in area Fourth of July parades, the annual “Show of Shows” (held in Atlantic City each winter), weddings and other events. [1]

Parade starts at Broad and Walnut Streets, proceeding north to City Hall. [4]

They get it, and for the last several months the Philadelphia Mummers String Band Association has been meeting quietly with other Mummers divisions and the city, scheming to launch a faster, more agile, more traditional parade, especially in South Philadelphia, Ground Zero of Mummery. [2]

This is done in clubhouses, many of which are located on or near 2nd Street (called “Two Street” by some local residents) in South Philadelphia, which also serve as social gathering places for members. [...] Philadelphia’s 19th century Carnival of Horns drew thousands of merrymakers in festive costumes to the vicinity of Eighth and South Streets in South Philadelphia. [...] The Mummers Parade traveled northward on Broad Street in Philadelphia for decades until the 1995 parade when the parade was moved to Market Street due to construction work on Broad Street (notably the “Avenue of the Arts” between Washington Ave. and City Hall). [1]

Following the Comics, the wench brigades will come to Broad from east on Washington, then turn north toward City Hall (and the broadcast booth they love to rush). [...] A chronic parade problem lies in the gaps between String Bands and, worse, between String Bands and the three other divisions - Comics, Fancies and Fancy Brigades. [3]
