Ashok Chauhan talks with ScienceWatch.com and answers a few questions about this month’s Fast Breaking Paper in the field of Pharmacology & Toxicology. [1]

Dr. Ashok K Chauhan, Ph.D. was born in 1942 Askaripur a village in Bijnor the state of Uttar Pradesh, northern India. [...] After completing his MSc in Chemistry (or rather after stealing it from his enemy) in 1963, Dr Ashok K Chauhan worked at one of the largest industrial groups in India, then in 1966 won scholarship to research chemical engineering and plastic technology in West Germany. We are investigating extra hepatic cell population as a target of HCV in relation to neuropathogenesis in particular astrocytes which are brain resident cells expressing HCV receptor CD81. [3]

We have systematically described our findings and the possible repercussions of the previous studies which rely heavily on pleiotropic effects of protein transduction domains (PTD) or Tat protein (the transactivator protein from lentiviruses, notably HIV) which may not necessarily be true. [1]

The HCV is an RNA virus, which produces chronic infection in humans and leads to acute hepatitis, cirrhosis, hepatic cellular carcinoma and hepatic encephalopathy. [...] We have observed that Tat protein localizes permanently in the nucleus and nucleolus and therefore, is implicated in cellular gene regulation apart from HIV transcription. [3]

Our study has reported novel findings and highlights ingenious ways to improve the delivery of small therapeutic molecules using cell-penetrating peptides. [1]
